Hour of House continues! Here’s a Roundup of discoveries, shared gems, and more:
Canadian Dance-is-a-feeler Sammie J recommended the 1200 Warriors’ weekly mixshow, 1200 Radio, for underground Soulful, Jackin’, and other genres. That’s actually also my crew (I released my first EP through their label, 1200 Traxx), so that worked out nicely! Ran into Cali’s Giano, New Zealand’s Camille, and several others from the underground in the chat room there.
Cali’s Elephantisha Sheytwana Jenkins stopped by with a classic: Planet Soul - Set you free. Nothing but good memories from that one!
Kelvin Teech Lee came back with an onslaught of good music picks: a video of Kenny Bobien singing You Are My Friend so soulfuly! The classic Mr. Fingers Can You Feel It (probably one of the most recognizable underground house tracks ever, and way way old school). Little Louie Vega and Jay Sealee’s smash hit from back in the day, Diamond Life, though you really should check out the longer Dance Ritual Mix for an extended journey into delightful vocal bliss—I used to play the hell out of that record back when I learned to DJ. Teech even squeezed in a little Carl Cox with We Rob Together.
Another Dance-is-a-feeler, Jose Caceres, playfully joked about spending time in his House—I said it only counted if he had House Music playing, to which he retorted: “When ISN’T it playing” haha! Awesome.
For my part, I spent the hour listening to all the stuff people posted on today’s Hour of House Open Thread on my Facebook Page. I also sneaked in about 18 minutes of DJ Mes’s new for-sale Funky House DJ mix, Guest of the House Volume 3. Couple of cool cuts on there, with some Disco influence thrown in liberally.
That’s all for tonight! Catch you guys next time and be sure to join in to the Hour of House each day—do something, anything, House Music-related and let me know what you found, did, or wanted to share! Be sure to follow the #hourofhouse Tumblr tag or Twitter hash to stay up to speed on our digs.

What’s up, guys. Earlier tonight, I thought of ‘Hour of House’ as a way for us all to spend an hour doing something related to House Music: dancing, reading, listening to new music, sharing, whatever. Maybe we can make this into a fun tradition of sharing the music and culture we love? We will see! Tonight was a success. I know I discovered some cool new tunes, articles, and videos, so here is the day’s roundup of links and ideas for all to enjoy:
Raul Devisio shared the video ‘UK Garage Scott Garcia Feat MC Styles It’s A London Thing’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obZIZWzlJa8. Deep House!
Maurizio Izo Samuel from Baltimore shared info on two upcoming underground parties in Baltimore, Deep Sugar (Fridays) and OkayAfrica (Wednesdays). I hear Bmore has a rich history of house dance!
Michael Martinez used the hour to work out at the gym to some House Music, which is never a bad idea.
DJ Kemetik pledged his hour but sadly didn’t share what he did with it! Maybe a new DJ mix??
My friend Eric Hamilton from San Fran shared several cool songs: Jay West’s Pretty Girls, Yogi & Husky’s Just Bounce, Chuck Love’s How We Get Down, Bad 2 The Bone’s Never Gonna Stop,
My boy JACK INTO HOUSE shared an article, Is the Art of Being a DJ Dead? and sent good positive vibrations our way generally. Check him out on Twitter.
And I shared: Gimme Shelter [2007], a great long read about the seminal underground party in New York. Learned a lot about Timmy Regisford, 12-hour DJ sets, the strange but softening rivalry between the breakdance and House Dance scenes, key players in the dance community, and so much more about the history. I also found Quentin Harris’s Cloud 9 Edit of Donnie’s track, a super cool sample of Bill Brewster’s 2010 Interview collection The Record Players: DJ Revolutionaries, which led me to this 2008 review of an evolutionary psychology book on music’s evolutionary purpose, and other fun things I ran into.
Peace out and catch you guys next time on Hour of House!
Ridiculously fun video wherein I explain my upcoming House Dance-only Youtube Channel, wehousedance!
“And this guy, he would, you know, he would make these videos, before very many people knew who he was, of him dancing, and he started doing these weekly ones where he’d say, ‘Let’s all learn this short pattern of moves together’. And then more and more people started finding out about it, and dancing more, and listening to his music, and as he honed his sound and his stuff started sounding really nice, he began to travel to all these different cities around the world as a DJ. And right before his DJ gigs would start, he would do these 15-minute dance workshops with people, and they’d all put routines together from those dance videos of his and then start the party. And that gave people SUCH a great way to connect the entire arc, to see the whole story come to life, to tap into that FEELING…it was like an entirely new way to enjoy a club night…it was all about the dancing. It was so much fun. I will never forget those Dance Is A Feeling nights.”
